USES OF THE PRODUCTS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

The process of photosynthesis allows the plant to grow by producing new tissue.

Plants need to photosynthesize to produce glucose. This sugar can be used by the plant in the process of respiration.

Plants will respire during the day and also at night and so require sugars 24 hours a day.

Respiration provides the plant with energy for growth, reproduction and a variety of cell functions.

Some of the glucose produced during photosynthesis is not used immediately and is stored by the plant. The glucose is converted into an insoluble substance called starch and stored in the plant leaves, stem or roots.

A good example of this is in potatoes and wheat, which contain high levels of starch.
